Creating A Culture of Safety

We care about each and every employee at IWC and it’s our priority to make sure everyone finishes their work each day injury-free. This means putting safety first. At IWC, we are proud of the safety culture we have created, but it’s something that needs to be maintained and championed over time.

We are continually staying up to date on safety trends, changes to regulations, and learning new methodologies and practical applications for safety. Then we translate these learnings to our job sites. It is a continual process that we take extremely seriously.

We are working with some of the biggest machines in the industry on our civil construction projects, and we work on complex projects in rough terrain or climates. These variables present a whole set of additional safety challenges that we need to stay diligent about incorporating into our day-to-day safety practices. With a full-time Health & Safety Manager and a modern safety program, we are always pushing to keep safety core to everything we do. From detailed project planning to job site assessments, we constantly focus on the tools and processes to ensure a safe job site.

Outside of our internal team and practices, we participate in the BC Construction Safety Alliance Certificate of Recognition (COR™) program, “that recognizes companies who develop and implement health and safety and injury management systems that meet an industry standard.” What we like about the COR program is that it systematically requires continual safety auditing, which we incorporate into our safety maintenance plan as a mechanism of accountability. Safety is a focus every day at IWC and with COR we accountable to the highest standards in the industry. Learn more about COR here.

We are also SAFE Certified, part of the BC Forest Safety association, which applies to foresty sector workers. IWC completes much of its civil work in remote parts of the province, including forested terrain, and our remote teams have an added level of safety with this special certification. As a SAFE Certified Contractor, our remote teams have the training and resources to complete complicated jobs in a safe and organized manner. Read more about this program here

The bottom line is that we care about our people, and this means keeping them safe through internal and external practices and programs. We are proud of our high safety standards and the culture of safety we have established for IWC and we are only just getting started.
